Jump Start 2011 by Celebrating Healthy Hearts with Nattokinase

Enzymedica believes that balanced decisions regarding food choices and exercise can lead to many long term benefits for cardiovascular health.   For many, enzyme supplements can be a great way to enhance a healthy living routine.

A great example of an enzyme effecting heart health is nattokinase. Enzymedica’s Natto-K contains a nattokinase blend which includes NSK-SD®, which has been shown to have a high fibrinolytic activity (breaks down fibrin) and antioxidant activity. Nattokinase has been the subject of 17 studies, including two small human trials.

Researchers from JCR Pharmaceuticals, Oklahoma State University, and Miyazaki Medical College tested nattokinase on 12 healthy Japanese volunteers (6 men and 6 women, between the ages of 21 and 55). The tests indicated that the natto generated a heightened ability to support circulation.  On average, the volunteers” ELT (a measure of how long it takes to dissolve a blood clot) dropped by 48 percent within two hours of treatment. An additional study showed a 11% decrease in blood pressure after just two weeks.

Enzymes may play a supportive role in the healing and recovery process, but do not supplant good decisions when it comes to your choices of food and activities.  Natural ingredients for cholesterol support may be beneficial for individuals looking to maintain healthy cholesterol levels or to promote overall cardiovascular health.  Many health conditions such as diabetes and elevated blood pressure may be associated with imbalanced cholesterol levels. Individuals interested in natural ingredients for cholesterol management should work with a licensed health care provider to evaluate their condition before, and during the use of any cholesterol balancing formulas.

Enzymedica suggests the use of Lypo Gold™ as a complementary product.

Enzymedica’s Lypo Gold™ contains multiple strains of lipase, an enzyme which breaks down fats found in food.  A deficiency in the natural production of lipase may adversely affect the digestive system’s ability to properly digest fat, which may result in increased cholesterol levels.  Supporting digestion with a high potency lipase enzyme formula, such as LypoGold, may assist the digestive system with maintaining normal cholesterol levels.

Generally speaking, enzyme-based cardiovascular formulas approach healthy cholesterol levels by effecting other processes in the body, not targeting cholesterol directly.

Oral Proteases

19_virastopProteases, or proteolytic enzymes are specific for protein digestion. Simply put, protease enzymes break down proteins, be they undigested proteins in the digestive system, cellular debris or toxins in the blood.  Some proteolytic enzymes work specifically in the bloodstream to support metabolic reactions like healthy cellular repair and immunity, sparking the chemical reactions required to sustain life. The body employs protease enzymes to break down foreign invaders such as bacteria, yeasts, and viruses.

Oral Proteases

Research has shown that oral proteases, taken as a dietary supplement on an empty stomach may aid our immune system in ways other supplements can’t. These supplemental enzymes are absorbed and carried into the blood stream where they are bound to plasma proteins. The oral proteases bind to these plasma proteins and then are able to break down protein-based pathogens in the blood. An interesting attribute of protease enzymes is that while they are able to dissolve almost all proteins, this only applies to proteins that are not components of living cells. For protease to digest a protein it must be damaged, attached to a dead organism, or be a protein that does not belong in the body. This instinctively intelligent process explains why proteases will digest proteins found in steak, however leave the protein lining of our stomach unharmed.

Not all proteases, however, can break down all proteins. For instance, one protease in particular has been shown to have a profound effect on mucus. Mucolase is a special enzyme that is classified as proteolytic and mucolytic. Mucolytic enzymes break down excess mucus in the body, including the lungs and sinuses. Other proteolytic enzymes useful for the immune system are nattokinase, catalase and serratiopeptidase (serrapeptase).

When enzymes are used to achieve a therapeutic effect, they are taken on an empty stomach (a half hour before or two hours after a meal). They are not intended to help digest food. Instead they are absorbed into the blood and benefit different systems of the body, such as the immune system, by providing it with essential enzymes to manufacture healthy white blood cells.
