Enhancing Vitamin and Mineral Absorption

Many of the health issues faced by people today can be attributed to nutritional deficiencies. Malabsorption is a common problem where nutrients from food or supplements are not properly utilized within the gastrointestinal tract. A lack of nutrients may lead to serious health conditions, which is why it is important to have proper absorption of vitamins, minerals, herbs and nutrients.

Optimize What?

Enzymedica has been a leader in enhancing digestion, absorbability, and thus the nutritional status of the consumer through the use of plant based enzymes. Enzymedica now goes a step further in enhancing the absorption of vitamins, minerals, herbs as well as nutrients with Vitamin & Mineral Optimize.

Bioperine

The active ingredient in Vitamin & Mineral Optimize is Bioperine, a standardized extract from the fruit of Piper nigrum L (black pepper). Bioperine is fat soluble so it is able to penetrate intestinal cell membranes, leading to better absorption. It is regarded as a thermonutrient that can stimulate thermogenesis. This means that it can increase energy available for nutrient absorption by increasing the activity of enzymes, and may also increase blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract and increase the levels of enzymes involved in transport of nutrients into intestinal cells.

Enhancing Supplements

The potency in Vitamin & Mineral Optimize is specifically designed for supplemental vitamin, mineral and herb absorption when taken on an empty stomach. Vitamin & Mineral Optimize can help you get the most out of the nutrients you consume. To learn more about absorption of supplements, read volume 3, issue 2 of the Enzymedica newsletter.

Acid: It’s Not Just About the Stomach Anymore

Acid. In the context of digestion, this word conjures up painful feelings of heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. And while stomach acid is a familiar concept, concerns about hyperacidity reach much further than just the stomach and our digestive system. Our body’s pH, or the balance of acid versus alkaline, is a delicate balance which when disturbed can cause significant health issues beyond indigestion.

To assist our body’s pH chemistry, Enzymedica offers pH-Basic, a synergistic blend of minerals, enzymes, super-foods, and herbs. pH-Basic will also enhance the efficiency of enzymes in the body, both digestive and metabolic.

There are numerous causative factors for systemic acidity. Causes include stress, environmental pollution, not enough or excessive exercise, and the most important factor, diet.

Dave Barton, Enzymedica’s Director of Education explains, “Diet has a huge impact on our internal pH balance. Acid forming foods include excessive fats, animal products, dairy, mucous forming foods, and toxic food residues. The more acid forming foods we eat, the more acidic we become.”

There are many foods which have been shown to assist the body with pH balance. In particular, ripe fruit, vegetables, soy bean products such as miso, and supplements such as calcium citrate.

Barton continues, “In many cases, simple dietary choices are insufficient as a means of managing our body’s pH levels, and supplementation is necessary. For these individuals, Enzymedica’s pH-Basic is a perfect partner to a healthy pH.”*

The goal of pH-Basic is to support the body on a systemic level, through the bloodstream, rather than working on a local level in the stomach. To accomplish this, pH-Basic is enteric-coated to deliver its contents directly to the small intestine, and prevent the neutralization of our stomach acid. pH Test strips are included with each bottle of pH-Basic to allow the user to test their own pH balance. We believe it is best to test pH over the course of a 24 hour period. Testing over several days will enable you to easily make dietary adjustments to stay in balance.

The mineral blend in pH-Basic consists of the same minerals often depleted in an acid environment and which make up the body’s electrolyte mineral ratio. They are amino acid chelated and pharmaceutical grade for safety and absorbability. Also included is the naturally alkaline organic super-food hydrilla. Marshmallow and papaya leaf extract are added to help soothe, and an enzyme blend rounds out the formula to help promote uptake of the minerals, herbs and greens in pH-Basic.*

Enzymedica offers pH-Basic in both 60 and 120 Capsule bottles.

Grass Roots Tour Supports Autism Awareness

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the world. With 1 child in 150 receiving a diagnosis of autism, (statistically, that’s 1diagnosis every 20 minutes in the United States!) families everywhere are seeking a message of hope.

While autism is generally considered neurological disorder, it is not uncommon for autistic children to face additional health challenges, including digestive difficulty and intestinal inflammation. Sensitivities and food intolerance plague children on the autistic spectrum, so common diet modifications for these children include a gluten-free, casein-free diet, or the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

Enzyme supplements have been indicated as supportive. Dedicated to the digestive health of all children, (not just those with health challenges) Enzymedica, a leader in digestive enzyme care provides financial support and educational
outreach to the autism community. In 2009, the company will sponsor the Autism Grass Roots Tour, an initiative of the nonprofit Autism Hope Alliance (AHA), a foundation created by Enzymedica to raise funds for autism awareness and treatment.

The Autism Grass Roots Tour features Raun Kaufman, CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of
AmericaTM
, along with Kristin Selby Gonzalez, the Director of Autism Education for Enzymedica, and he mother of a son with autism. The tour will crisscross the country over an eleven month period, sharing how to begin after a diagnosis of autism, what to add to existing treatments, and how to stay inspired.
The events are free and open to family members and health professionals seeking autism
education.

According to Gonzalez, “Our experience working with children on the spectrum is that they
appear to have difficulty digesting their food. Some examples of this are infrequent stools, loose stools and undigested food in the stools. Using enzymes along with a specialized diet can help promote proper digestion. This will also help support the proper absorption of vitamins and minerals found in the therapeutic foods we feed our children.”

In addition to their sponsorship of the tour, Enzymedica will be donating 100 full tuition scholarships for families to attend a Start-Up program at the Autism Treatment Center of AmericaTM. The Center is the home of The Son-Rise Program®, a unique treatment for children and adults challenged by Autism and other developmental difficulties.

Raun Kaufman has said, “Autism is not a life sentence.” Innovative play therapy, biomedical
treatments and enzyme supplementation have been shown to breathe new life into children
facing what was once felt to be a condition with little hope.

Part 4: Finding the Right Biomedical Interventions : By Kristin Selby Gonzalez Director of Autism Education for Enzymedica Mother of Jaxson, diagnosed with autism

One aspect of my son’s autism that became apparent very quickly was that it had many biomedical components. My son had heavy metals such as mercury in his blood, he had chronic constipation alongside with severe stomach pain and he has extreme sensitivity to a wide range of foods such as dairy, wheat, and other grains.

It was hard to watch my cute little guy crying and pushing huge yoga type balls into his stomach in an effort to get some relief! I was so grateful to have found Dr. DeMio (Jaxson’s Defeat Autism Now Doctor) in Ohio, who is instrumental in helping Jaxson with mineral supplementation, chelation (to eliminate the mercury and other toxins), detoxification of Jaxson’s gut, and other crucial treatments.

He is rare in that he combines in-depth know-how with the most sincere caring and respect! My own research had led me to the dietary intervention that is best for Jaxson: a gluten and casein-free version of the specific carbohydrate diet (www.pecanbread.com). One of the most exciting interventions I also found is enzyme therapy. Because Jaxson (and so many other children with autism) has such severe digestive issues, this therapy has proved to be one of utmost importance! I have to admit that, at first, I didn’t think enzymes were a big deal, as Jaxson had been taking them for some time with no discernable results.

However, I began taking enzymes myself from a company called Enzymedica for my own digestive issues, which, although not as debilitating as Jaxson’s were nevertheless very uncomfortable for me. Immediately (and I mean with one meal!) my stomach pains and constipation shrank to almost nothing. When I introduced these enzymes to Jaxson, wow! I was bowled over! Jaxson’s language exploded! I could now ask him a question like, “Jaxson, how are you?” and he would suddenly reply, “I am doing good.” He would spontaneously say, » Continue reading “Part 4: Finding the Right Biomedical Interventions : By Kristin Selby Gonzalez Director of Autism Education for Enzymedica Mother of Jaxson, diagnosed with autism”
